Chapter Seven

Issa had Friday night to herself. There were any number of things she could have done. Dag and Shannon had invited her to a dinner they were having with friends. But the friends were people she didn’t know and her shyness had prompted her to beg off from that.

There was a new release movie at the theater that her old friend Neily Pratt had asked her to see. But part and parcel of that was Issa meeting Neily’s husband, Wyatt Grayson, and again, Issa shied away.

She could also have merely gone for a walk in town around the square because there was always something going on there, but that, too, would mean a lot of meeting people and talking.

So—as was most often true of Issa, left to her own devices—she opted for an evening sequestered in her apartment.

The decision for how to spend her time wasn’t without its purpose, though. She had a new stack of pamphlets from the obstetrician and a prenatal book the doctor had loaned her. She thought that maybe if she immersed herself in pregnancy literature and made a concerted effort to connect to what she read, the pregnancy might begin to seem real to her. She might begin to feel pregnant.

Then maybe she might be able to fight the insurmountable attraction that was growing for Hutch.

That was her Friday night goal.

Because no pregnant woman should be developing the kind of crush she was developing on a man who wasn’t the father of her baby.

No pregnant woman should be allowing a man who wasn’t the father of her baby to kiss her the way Hutch had kissed her the previous evening.

And no pregnant woman should be craving more of those kisses—and so much more than mere kisses—the way she was craving that from Hutch.

If she was going to crave something, it should be weird food combinations, not men who had nothing to do with her current situation.

The problem was, she was craving more of those kisses from Hutch. And more than that from Hutch. And just about everything else that had to do with Hutch, including and most especially his company.

So she wasn’t having much luck even reading the material let alone allowing it to make any impact on her, not when her mind kept wandering to Hutch, to that kiss the night before, to every tiny sound she heard that caused her to listen closely so she could tell if he and Ash were back from the rehearsal dinner for Ian and Jenna’s wedding yet.

Pregnant. You’re pregnant. Pregnant people don’t pine for men who don’t have anything to do with their pregnancy, she lectured herself.

But it didn’t matter. She still didn’t feel pregnant and all she really wanted was to be with Hutch.

So she gave up on the prenatal book and the pamphlets, stuck them in a kitchen drawer and went into her bedroom to make her final decision on what to wear to the wedding tomorrow evening.
